New to the area and this was my first choice for a new eye doctor. I am very disappointed with this doctor. I feel they do unnecessary procedures to charge more and I don’t feel they are in it for the care of the patient, more for lining of their pockets. They make things very inconvenient and I don’t have time to play their games. Plus I don’t like being told to wear my mask correctly when it is slipping down while speaking to doctor behind plexiglass. Office was very uncomfortably stringent on mask policy, they don’t make you feel human.

I am dismayed to have to write this review, but I cannot recommend this company.This is my experience:I created an appointment with Starling Eye Group as I wanted a new pair of eyeglasses and a checkup of my eyes, took time off work, and attended early in the morning. Overall, I was happy with the Dr. who showed me pictures taken and generally acted in a professional mannerPrior to the examination the staff who took the pictures wanted to dilate my eyes. I had never had this procedure before (I am from out of country where the practice is less common) and asked about the side effects. I was told that reading would be fuzzy for 2-4 h. I asked for other side effects and specifically asked if I would be able to drive to work. I was told that driving wouldn’t be a problem (only the reading) and that was all, thus, I happily consented to the dilatation. After the exam I picked out a pair of eyeglasses, paid, and proceeded to work.After leaving the office I did note that everything was very bright, but it wasn’t until a few blocks later that I developed a massive headache and stinging eye-pain. I was forced to park away from my office and proceeded on foot (in the FL sun). At that point, I was not a happy customer (and still had a massive headache).Later in the day (when I could read again), I was sent a text prompting me to write a review. There was also an option to contact the company directly if I had a negative experience. I do not generally take action and write negative reviews unless extremely warranted, and decided that I would inform them of my experience and allow them to respond BEFORE I wrote this review.I explained the problem in detail, and highlighted that there appeared to be a lack of training concerning photosensitivity side effects of the treatments they offered. I wasn’t offered any documentation stating these side effects even when directly asked.I also expressed that as Starling Eye Group purports to be a medical provider (as opposed to a simple non-medical purveyor of eyeglasses), I would expect their staff to be able to accurately describe the side effects of their treatments. As a patient, I have the right to know how I will be affected before agreeing to any procedure. I also highlighted that I did expect a response.My hope was that they would take swift action, assure me the training was implemented and that nobody else would have a similar experience. As I was still suffering from the photosensitivity-induced headache I also thought apology would have been nice. This action would have justified me NOT writing a negative review - an action I did not want to take.However, without any effort of reaching out to me, they responded by cancelling my future appointments, and glasses order without my consultation or agreement (they indicated that my credit card had been refunded, but did not specify if my insurance had been reimbursed). Now, I have taken time off work, was enormously inconvenienced (due to their failure), and don’t even have new eyeglasses. I am doubly dismayed that their action was taken over an OFFLINE critique that I courteously provided in good faith AT THEIR REQUEST. In my experience, they were fine to work with right up until the point where they messed-up – at which point I was no longer welcome. This is why I cannot recommend Starling Eye Group and believe that the action of writing this negative review (and accompanying “star”) is fully justified.Edit:Dr. Starling, I was further disheartened with your response - to imply that I had threatened you or your staff is untrue. I took great care to highlight my issue in a professional and factual manner, while encouraging further communication. Kindly remove this accusation from your response to my review.

Dr Starling was fantastic, but I broke my glasses no fault of the office all on me. When I went there to get them fixed I was told I would need new temples I asked them if I needed to just get new frames? I was told that the temples could be ordered so I paid the $120.00 and started the waiting game because they are on back order. I had to call several time to check the status on my glasses and was always told still on back order. So last week I went In to get my glasses because I’m tired of waiting and was told that they ordered me new frames and when I asked how much more this was going to cost the woman lead me to believe it was at no extra cost and never gave me a price,well I have waited 2 and a half months and today have been told that the temples are on back order Indefinitely and cost me now 150.00 more to get new frames. And didn’t even get the courtesy of a phone call I received all this information over a text message, I’ll be picking up my glasses getting a refund and never ordering glasses from here again.

Dr Starling was on time, thorough and answered all my questions. Her staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The reception waiting area and exam rooms were clean. The staff and clients had to wear masks the entire time we were inside the office. They practiced safe protocol and disinfected the machines before I used it. Highly recommend the Starling Eye Group.

So many good reviews, not my experience :( which assured I would NOT return…eye exam should be straight forward pleasant experience— as new patient I was confronted by receptionist about what exams I wanted and which tests I wanted to pay for, I had no idea and when asked for info she said If have to speak to doctor, but have to pay now for exams/tests before I discuss said special exams/ test with doctor…strange. It went downhill and never got better and Dr Starling had bedside of rattlesnake or was having bad day from here her dismissive attitude and of my questions that prompted the visit. Their “system” is for regulars, I can only assume. But This I won’t be, too many choices to be treated with rude take-or-leave-it attitudes.

While the appointment with Dr. Starling was adequate, the office visit itself was disappointing. I asked to get my pupillary distance (PD) taken and the office manager denied to do so without an additional payment. She handed me this document explaining a required $50 service fee. Their policy is that you either buy one of their $300+ glasses pairs or pay a $50 fee to get your PD. Instead of driving your customers to online retailers, lower your glasses pair prices to compete. You wont last long charging customers for their PD when other optometrists will do so for free.

Very positive experience! Really took their time with me and made sure I understood all my options. Also felt safe with their cleanliness and Covid protocols. If you’re looking for your permanent eye doctor, I highly recommend Dr. Starling!

I have gone to Starling Eye for years and they never disappoint. They are clean, professional, always on time, always organized. It’s easy to make an appointment, to park and I have never have had to wait. They make it easy to order glasses and contacts right there. The staff is all wonderful as is Dr. Starling. The office is white glove clean (it always is, not just during Covid) and they ensure your safety the whole time.

Just an okay experience here. Most of the staff are rude. Barely speak and when they do it’s like I was inconveniencing them.Ordered glasses and was told it would take 5-7 business days. Fast forward almost three weeks later...hadn’t heard anything. Finally called and they said they were ready...when I said I had never heard from anyone that they were done I was told they “messaged me” about a week ago. My husband also ordered glasses after I did and when his were ready he received a txt, call and voicemail, but I didn’t get any of that? When I told them this the response was rude, like I was the one who messes something up. Picked up my glasses and when I needed them adjusted, the employees again acted like it was an inconvenience...so thanks for that, because my husband and I will be finding another eye clinic after our experience here.The only positive was the clinic seemed clean and they were taking covid precautions.

Everyone was very friendly. Just went for an exam and contacts so can’t speak for trying on glasses. Everything seemed very thorough and clean. Wiped everything down before I put my face on any of the equipment. Will definitely be back.

This office seem to be taking the Corona virus seriously. The optical department cleans each pair of glasses after you try them on but sadly they dont wipe the lenses clean. I could hardly see through the lens from the dried on sanitizer. Great vision screening done as usual!

Just started going to this place yesterday. It was a great experience. Each of those I interacted with are always easy to talk to, very workable, and you can always have a good time talking with. Very professional, and up front with everything. The way they have everything run shows they are well organized.This is a place Id trust to get things done.They will ask you questions regarding your eyes, what youve had (contacts wise for instance). Ive been going to Dr. Starling since moving to Florida in 1998. Ive never had any issues, always a great experience. It had been a while since my last exam, so I got the full work-up. The young woman who took me back explained everything she was going to do step by step so there no surprises. Dr. Starling is warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. Professionalism from everyone from hello to goodbye.

I wish there were more than five stars that I could give this practice. the front-office and back-office staff are amazing very kind professional knowledgeable. I would not recommend this place if you have a young child. Although the staff was kind the doctor was not. My child was nervous to have her eye looked at and was being a little too chatty to which the doctor rudely cut her off and said something to the effect of We have other patients with more serious problems. That was just the start of it. My child needed her cornea looked at which a dye needed to be dropped in. My daughter was so nervous that she started crying. The doctor was visibly irritated and said well I can not do a thorough exam without the dye in her eye. This only made myself and my daughter more upset. The doctor didnt at all make my daughter feel comfortable or at ease. Then once my daughter agreed to let the doctor put the dye in her eyes, the doctor got upset and said Ugh I have to put gloves on again!Needless to say I would never come back to this office again nor would I recommend it. So disappointed!

If I could give zero stars, I would. I thought my first experience with Starling Eye Group went well until I left and realized I wasnt given my entire eyeglass prescription. I was asked to sign a form stating I was given my prescription. It was folded up and put into a folder so I didnt look at it. My mistake for not making sure, but my vision was so blurry from having my eyes dilated I just signed what was asked of me and left. I called the next day and asked again for my prescription to purchase glasses online. I was told there would be a $50 charge for my full prescription. When I said that it wouldve been nice if I was told that the day before, she cut me off and said that they tell everyone that. When I said well I wasnt told, she cut me off again and repeated her previous statement. I later spoke to some coworkers and they all agreed that the fact that they were charging for my prescription didnt sound right. I did some digging and read that eye doctors are required by law to give patients their prescription when asked. Learning this caused me to doubt what I was told by Dr. Starling regarding my eyeglass and contact lens prescription (which hadnt changed at all in 5 years and an eye alignment problem that she told me I had that requires special lenses). I tried to find the special lenses online and was not able to. I learned they could only be purchased from Starling Eye Group (how convenient for them!) as they were the only provider in Gainesville. So I decided to call my insurance company to inquire about going to a different eye doctor and getting a second opinion. The insurance agent asked me to tell him what happened when I went to Starling Eye Group so he could decide whether they would pay for an additional eye doctor visit. I did so and he said that what they were doing was not right. He called them to investigate my story. It turns out that I was misinformed by the person I spoke with on the phone. He spoke with someone else who told him that the $50 charge was not for my prescription but for the PD measurement which I could do myself. He also reasoned that if I could see with my current contacts then its safe to say my prescrition didnt change. I accepted his conclusion from the investigation and decided to just let it all go and to no longer see Dr. Starling as I felt her practices seemed shady. (Theres more to that story but this review is long enough already.) A week later, I received a letter from Dr. Starling dropping me as a patient. She was very rude and harsh accusing me of making false claims against her and saying there were signs up in her office giving instructions on how to find your prescription through their online portal. (Remember my eyes were dilated and I couldnt see.) She also said in the letter that all I needed to do was make a simple phone call and this wouldve been explained to me. (I DID call and was not told this.) Perhaps she should put the effort she put into the very long, drawn out letter she sent me into hiring front staff who are personable and actually know what they are talking about. Also, I would suggest not asking patients to sign paperwork after their eyes have been dilated and they are unable to see. Her actions were childish and uncalled for. How does she keep patients if she drops them the second they inquire about something they werent sure of? I would not recommend this business.

Quick and professional. Scheduling my appointment was really easy, I just picked a slot online and filled in my info so checking in was instant. They gave me a print copy of my Rx without having to ask, so no reading doctor-scribble. I do wish they were more transparent however. I explicitly said I wouldnt be buying glasses from them, but no one warned me that they would not measure my pupillary distance (needed for buying glasses) without an extra charge. I was also told by the (technician? assistant? the non-doctor who did the basic parts of my exam) that the expensive retinal imaging they offer is pretty much totally unnecessary for people under 40, but I had already agreed to pay for it and it would have been really awkward to back out at that time. I feel a little bit had but now that I understand their pricing schedule (I wish more medical offices would just post it transparently) Ill probably still go back.

In a time of COVID19 concern, it is GREAT to know I can receive excellent care with Dr.Starling and her staff safely. Their new protocols for patient screening, social distancing and disinfection are top notch! I KNOW!! I’m a Dental Hygienist and I know infection control inside and out. Ive been going to Starling Eye Group for a few years now and Ive been satisfied with every visit. Dr. Sterling and her staff are always great, and the office is pretty welcoming. Im in and out of my appointments fairly quickly, which is wonderful. I appreciate that theyve been patient with my incessant, uncontrollable blinking whenever something gets close to my eyes; childhood optometrist was a bit boorish so its a lovely change.The parking can be a bit of a hassle since its in an area with multiple offices/practices, but thats not their fault.

Ive went to Dr Starling over the course of at least 15 years. She and her staff have always been very kind and willing to answer all questions. I gotten both contacts and glasses with her office and they are very informative about their products. If you are looking an eye physician you wont be disappointed by choosing Dr Starling.

Can’t talk about how the doctor is because my appointment never happened, but the office staff is incredibly rude. After having some difficulty finding the building as the sign is no where to be seen, I was very frustrated and called to ask for guidance on how to find the building. The lady on the phone acted as if this was unbelievable, once I called to tell them I had made it they asked to reschedule my appointment. I said I would reschedule later, but admitted I still wasn’t sure where the building was. I could here the whole office staff laughing at me in the background. That seems like no way to treat someone who youre asking to reschedule an appointment. Thankful my appointment did not come to fruition, as who knows what kind of service I would have received if I had made it through the front doors. To the doctor who runs this eye center, please consider speaking to your staff about how they communicate with your patients, as it reflects badly on yourself.

I had my appointment on 5/4/2020, first available after the Covid-19 lockdown. I have to say, they were amazing with their infection control measure and I felt super safe going to get my eye exam. I’ve been going here for over 10 yrs and always recommend Dr Sterling to anyone looking for an eye doctor!!!

Our visit to Starling Eye Group was great! They accommodated my appointment and my 9 year-old daughters first eye exam together and it was a great experience for both of us. Been visiting Dr. Starling since at least 1995 (Way before they moved out of the Oaks Mall location). They are professional and thorough. I would recommend to anyone without hesitation.
