I have only high praise for Rick. I brought in my fathers 1946 Underwood typewriter which had been inoperable for decades. Rick passion his crews expertise knew what was needed to restore it back its original glory. I.couldnt be more pleased. I know it will last many more decades as it is passed down too future generations. Thanks again Rick for restoring a bit of the past.

Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful! I purchased a used typewriter online as a birthday present for my daughter, only to later find out that it was missing the ink reel. I stopped by the shop without knowing what I needed, and Rick knew the exact type for the make/model of the typewriter. But more than that, after just a quick look he knew that I was going to need another piece to make things work properly - and he just happened to have it on hand at the shop. My daughter was thrilled with her present. Rick also called back a couple of days later just to make sure the typewriter was working properly and to see if we needed any other help. This kind of service and attention to customers is not something you find often anymore. I will definitely go back for anything we need on this typewriter and would recommend anyone needing parts or service on their typewriter to go to Karly Business Machines as well.

I just got off the phone with Rick at Karl Business Machines and let me just say how thankful I am for him. I was having so much trouble knowing exactly which vintage typewriter I had in my possession (1956 Olympia SM3) and Rick not only gave me the knowledge that I was seeking but he helped me process my next move. This beautiful machine is no longer up for sale! I’m going to have it totally pampered and it is now a family heirloom that would make my Grandmother smile from ear to ear…well she is now I suppose!Rick thank you so very much for not only your knowledge and kindness but for being a good human being! TICKLED PINK! As a lover of pink and all things vintage, Ive always wanted a vintage typewriter in my favorite hue. My hubby worked with Rick to surprise me with this pink beauty as a belated birthday gift. We went with Rick because we wanted not only a beautifully colored machine but one guaranteed to be in excellent working order that I could actually use. Sure, there are other pink typewriters out there but many arent usable in their current state. It might take awhile to get your machine but its well worth the wait. My typewriter arrived in tip-top shape, packaged with great care for the journey here. The finish was even more beautiful in person than it looked in the photos. I now use it for all my personal correspondence and love the vintage flair of the type. Thanks, Rick, and cant wait for the mint green one that you are now working on for us!

The best in vintage typewriters!I found Karl Business Machines online when searching for a vintage typewriter. I discovered the extraordinary service and talent of Rick when contacting him for his help in choosing one from his website to be custom made for me. After deciding on the model and custom paint color, I placed my order. I could only imagine the finished product. Rick sent me photos during the restoration, then let me know when it was on the way. Shipped from New Jersey to California, it arrived safe and sound, beautifully and carefully packed. It was such a thrill to open the box!I think many businesses have lost their commitment to impeccable service and attention to details. It was refreshing to receive this vintage piece immaculately restored and with an updated, vibrant paint color flawlessly baked on. A typewriter that will now last for even more generations to come. The 1940s pink Royal Quiet Deluxe, I purchased. The 1950s mint green Olympia was a gift. I love them both for different reasons. Like their candy colors, who can have just one? Now I have a collection. Two is a collection, right? There is something about typing on a vintage typewriter that brings a romance to the present from the days long ago. With the sound of each key striking the ribbon and the high-pitched ring of the bell at the end of each line, I am connected at once to every author before me who used a manual typewriter to tell their stories. I love everything about writing this way. There is no one in the world who does what Rick does at Karl Business Machines. This is the place to go if you are looking for a fully restored vintage typewriter.

Just picked up my flea market typewriter. Rick was very honest about the value of it and how much money they not sink into it lol. He’s a great communicator and always returns phone calls and emails, which I highly respect. He cleaned my typewriter and changed the ribbon and told me other things I can do to it myself in order to save money. He also offered me a coke bottle of water on a very hot day. That’s service. My son has developed a love of older typewriters and was delighted when I gave him my 50 year old, electric typewriter from college. Unfortunately one of the keys no longer worked, it had some other serious problems and needed a good cleaning. I asked a good friend if he knew of a place where it could be repaired. He highly recommended Karl Business Machines. The owner was very nice to me and especially kind to my son, who is autistic, and treated him with the utmost respect and patience. I appreciated that so much and my son was very excited. We both felt that his typewriter was in good hands. We were Not disappointed. The typewriter was in excellent working condition, beautifully cleaned, and the price for all the work that needed to be done was far less than I could have expected! I was Very pleased, to say the least, and my son was thrilled to be able to use a typewriter that I had used so many years ago. I Highly recommend Karl because our experience was exceptional from beginning to end and I would definitely use him again.

I’ve been where you are now: skimming the reviews for Karl Business Machines, reading the testimonials on their web site, and perhaps entertaining the notion of contacting this small business. You might even wonder if all the glowing reviews are legit; one can scarcely find any negative comments or feedback concerning Rick and his team of experts. As it turns out, there is a reason (several reasons, actually) Karl Business Machines has a chorus of praise from its’ patrons. For starters, you will not find a better typewriter shop anywhere in the region, possibly in the world. Everything you’ve heard about Rick’s legendary customer service, professionalism, and the quality of their work is real. It is a pleasure and an honor to join others in expressing appreciation and gratitude for Karl Business Machines in the hopes of promoting this exceptional company.Let me clear: when you buy a machine from Rick, you’re not getting a worn-out typewriter somebody dusted off with a bit of compressed air, sprayed with rattle-can paint from the local hardware store, and over-lubricated with (dare I say it) WD-40. Perish the thought! What you’re getting from Karl Business Machines is a lovingly handcrafted hot-rod of a typewriter with buttery-smooth carriage movements and snappy keystrokes that can keep up with high-speed, caffeine-fueled bursts of creative writing. You’re also getting a machine with a custom, durable, baked-on finish that (adequately cared for) will last for generations. Finally, you’re getting a typewriter that looks exceptional and works just as hard as the writer.A typewriter from Karl Business Machines is not a disposable commodity like the expensive, unreliable portable computing devices commonly used today. The typewriters Rick sells are heirlooms; these machines will outlive their owners with mindful use and storage. Try finding a writing instrument of this caliber on Amazon or eBay; once you discover how scarce and special this is, call Rick.Rick called me to make sure I received parts he sent (at no cost) and I mentioned how fond I was of the custom typewriters on the Karl Business Machines website. I shared with him the volume of writing I do and my fast-paced “style” of typing. Rick promptly suggested the Olympia SM3 I am presently using to draft this review. Having spent some time with this typewriter, I’m pleased to report his recommendation was spot-on. It would seem Rick can pair a typist with a typewriter in the same way a renowned chef can pair foods and drinks into a delectable meal. The Olympia SM3 De Luxe Rick and the team at Karl Business Machines put together for me is distinctive; it makes writing an absolute pleasure. It has a “touch” unlike any of my other typewriters. Somehow it managed to displace my beloved 1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe as my prized typewriter—the crown jewel of my small collection. If you order a custom typewriter from the artisans at Karl Business Machines, it will be worth every penny you pay for it and then some.If there is one thing about Karl Business Machines that concerns me, it is the dread of a world without Rick and his team of experts. I can hardly imagine how many decades of combined experience they have in the art and science of servicing and restoring manual typewriters. Even so, I hope they find some passionate young apprentices devoted to learning their uncommon yet exquisite craft. If you want an heirloom-grade typewriter, I strongly recommend getting your order in sooner rather than later; this is a rare opportunity to own a world-class, high-caliber writing machine.

Rick fixed my Smith Carona vintage typewriter. It was filthy, the keys didn’t work, and more. I actually found it in a case in a trash pile on the street in Brooklyn NY. Now it works like a charm. There were several options for the service and he made only the repairs necessary - at a cost that was less than I was anticipating. More than his skills and expertise in fixing my typewriter, he is a genuinely really nice person and is very passionate about his work. He went out of his way to accommodate my timing re: drop off (he opened his shop specifically at a time I could get there) and pick up (he met me 1/2 way between my location and his shop). At his shop, he showed us a lot of really interesting vintage machines that he owned and worked on. Lastly, he bought me a pie! We met for the pickup near a farm market and he recommended the pie there. So after loading the typewriter in the car, I headed to the farm market and Rick was there too. And he bought me a blueberry pie - which was such a kind and thoughtful thing to do. I highly recommend Rick if you need service on any typewriter or vintage business machine.

If I thought the web site was impressive the store was even more so. The variety and amount of stock on hand was amazing. The owner, Rich, greeted me and was very knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic about all his machines. He listened to me and showed me several typewriters he thought might interest me, some of which were used by movie companies. He took the time to explain to me the differences of the machines and how they operated. He also gave me a little history on them. I appreciated his patience as I took quite a long time to decide which one I liked the most. Rich already knew which one I would choose before I did. When I tried to pay the bill, Rick said Theres no charge, it was just an adjustment ( an adjustment to him was a miracle to me) When I insisted I pay him for his work, he wouldnt hear of it. Rick, I cant thank you enough, your skill and generosity are unmatched. Posted on Behalf of LS

This shop, and the repairman who helped me, were a lifesaver. I needed a typewriter fixed 2 days before my wedding (I wanted to use it as a guestbook) - and they quickly figured out the issue and efficiently fixed it (took a total of 10 mins, if that) with no charge. You can tell these guys know what theyre doing - I know where Im going if I ever have a typewriter issue again. Thanks so much!

What a helpful, wonderful place. Our California granddaughter wanted a typewriter for her 18th birthday. We had two non-working machines, both used by her great-grandfather. Rick advised us the vintage Royal would be better treasure than the 70s Brother model. Alas, despitehis efforts, the Royal had fatal problems, so he made a late switch to the Brother, brought it back to life and shipped it to San Diego just in time to put a wide smile on the Birthday girl. We cant say enough about Ricks care and special effort.

SUMMARY: great experience and Rick works hard to please customers without trying to suck their wallets dryREVIEW: Wow. To start, I had a wonderful experience meeting Rick and I felt confident leaving my typewriter in his hands for repair. Before I even get to the service, I want to take the time to explain how personable and kind Rick was to work with. I had been looking at a bunch of different places to drop my typewriter off for repairs, but Rick had lower rates and I decided to reach out. Not only did he answer right away, he gave me his number to send pictures of my machine to him to get a tentative quote before I drove a long while to get to his shop. When I got there, he helped me carry my machine and looked it over, explaining the things he could see needed to be repaired while also taking the time to listen to my requests. After filling out the paperwork, he then proceeded to show me the different machines he had around his shop, the different colored frames he had painted, and even pictures from movies or events that he provided machines for! (Look on the website to see what movies and shows he provided typewriters for!). When I mentioned that my little brother wanted a green typewriter but I couldnt afford it, he showed me some different color options and told me he could work something out with me in the future when I wanted to buy my brother a typewriter. For my long drive home, he offered me boiled water and even helped me carry things to my car. Overall, you could tell that he not only cared about my machine, but his occupation in general. He is very passionate about what he does. Now, my Smith corona that I dropped off was in pretty rough shape. The case was broken, the keys all got stuck, it was rusted, etc. But after getting my machine back, its gorgeous and everything works perfectly! And I had mentioned to Rick that I was away at college, so I told him to take his time on my machine. A few last minute movies and stuff came up, and Rick expressed how sorry he was that I would have to wait longer for my machine. It didnt really bother me much considering I was at school anyway, but I thought it was nice that he took the time to express his apologies. And because he felt bad for me waiting, when I picked up my machine, he so kindly gave me a new carrying case and ribbons for free, which I am so incredibly grateful for. And considering he by no means had to do that for me, it shows how much he cares about his customers.Lastly, I want to mention that I brought a different machine to be cleaned when I piked up my repaired Smith Corona. When Rick looked at it, he gave me a quote that I couldnt afford. When I was deciding whether or not to let him clean my machine anyway, he stoped me. He told me not to leave my machine because it wouldnt be worth it. He explained that the machine I brought was relatively common, and told me to go and find the same machine in gray with less damage and then have the green plates put on the working body, which would save me money. But importantly, he told me this even though it wouldnt give him any money. He was honest with me instead of trapping me into an expensive repair job for a machine that was worth less than the repairs. Thats notable. The only neutral thing I have to say is that because Rick is busy, make sure to call to check upon your machines every once in a while. He always answers and knows which machine is yours, but its easier to call him than wait for a call because he does have so many customers. Thanks Rick for getting my typewriter working again!

Once again Karl Business Machines by way of the greatest technician, Rick D. has solved a problem with an electronic typewriter first manufactured back in the 90s. If you own electronic typewriters with word screens, selectrics IBM Ds and all other models manual and electric this is the place you need to go. Thanks again, Rick.

First going to Rick with a very beat up typewriter, I knew the odds of it being able to be refinished were very slim. Rick was a very stand up guy and informed me that it would cost me more money to refinish the one I had than to buy a new(er) one that would ultimately come out in better shape anyway. Due to my limited knowledge, Rick helped me find the right typewriter for the right price. After taking it to Rick for final touchups, I am extremely satisfied as he had been so helpful along the way and you can tell he really takes pride in his work. If I have any typewriters in the future, or anyone asks me where to go for their own, I would recommend Karl Business Machines, 10/10 times!

My daughter needed a Comptometer for a charity project (long story). Rick went out of his way to help make this happen. I had no idea what a Comptometer even was let alone where to find one. Not only was the event a success but we got a great education on what the first successful mechanic key driven calculator was. Thank you Rick and Karl Business Machines. What a pleasure to meet you.

A while back, I scored this amazing late-1940s Royal Quiet DeLuxe from Rick at Karl Business Machines. I use it on a regular basis and its just as snappy several years later as the day I unpacked it!Mine has a custom yellow and black paint job, as well (I tried to attach a picture, but Googles having issues, I guess). The very-involved process Rick uses clearly is magnificent because it remains flawless, despite heavy use.If you have been to KBMs web site and viewed the various videos, know that all the accolades, kudos and plaudits for Ricks work are well-earned! Theres a reason why so many movie makers (Hidden Figures! The Post! Men in Black!) have been leaning on KBM for their typewriter needs. You absolutely CANNOT go wrong by visiting KBM or, if youre like me, simply calling or e-mailing Rick with your specific needs. Hes a great guy and loves to shoot the breeze about these terrific machines!
