Very unique place to grab breakfast and tea. Its not fancy and you would be fine going in with sandals. The breakfast was very good. I ordered to breakfast tacos and my wife got the English muffin french toast and both were delicious. The shop had a wide assortment of black, green, red, and white teas. They are served in individual kettles and you can select your cup from a shelf. My wife got the Irish breakfast black and I the passion fruit red. The kettles are big enough to have about three full cups. The tea was also fantastic.

Madhatters has a very eccentric atmosphere reminiscent of, well, Alice in Wonderland’s Madhatter. However, the coffee wassubpar. I ordered a coffee, out in my own cream and sugar and was underwhelmed. I also ordered the spinach scram. It wasn’t a bad price at all- only $6. It tasted alright but could have used a bit more salt. Three stars for the aesthetic of the place but I would pass on the coffee and perhaps even the breakfast. I’ll have to give this spot another try but for right now, three stars is suffice.

Well it took a moment to figure out how it all works. Apparently if there are no menus at the front door they keep them at the register. You go up to the register to order and pay then they give you a table picture and your food is brought to you. If you order a hot tea you need to grab a tea cup to take with you. You seat yourself,I had my husband grab us a table before we ordered just in case, they were quite busy. We got the afternoon tea but had to sub for chicken and spinach as they were out of salmon and bacon on a Sunday. Also got the Ham Benedict. The pot of tea was barely 2cups worth, milk and sugar was to be collected at the coffee bar. They had forgotten about the petite fours( a brownie cut into four pieces, not little cakes as on would expect). It all taste fine but the servings were quite small. We were still hungry when leaving but dare not to order more as they were running quite behind. Definitely worth a trip for the experience, but thats about it.Blueberry scones were very good. A little overdone but they were warm so I didnt mind.

Went to Mad Hatter at 8:30am on a Saturday morning. It was quiet in the restaurant which was nice for that early in the morning. Two people total, we ordered 2 pots of tea, two sandwiches, a bagel and fruit.Everything we had was delicious. Each pot of tea was between 3-4 cups. I love that there is sugar in the raw as an option!Service was good. Prices were good. We will be back!

Very cool and interesting atmosphere. I love the freedom of the place. You can sit anywhere, with many rooms to choose from, get your own drinks aside from the tea, and then place your order. Cute little sandwiches with the party orders. For something more substantial I suggest ordering an individual sandwich or adding soup and/or salad. Spinach Chicken Salad sandwich was my favorite! Had a great time with my family and will go back in the future.

The mimosas were good and our party that went liked them! We got the pitcher for $15 and it easily had 2 servings each for a party of 4. Was a little underwhelmed by the breakfast that we ordered though. Had pretty high standards walking in though so its not like it was terrible. It was still pretty good but just had a basic taste to bacon and egg burritos. Thought the breakfast potatoes couldve been better and had more flavor. They can use a hash brown option here.

Unique. Cozy. I took my 6 y.o daughter for a real tea party experience. We ordered the High tea which was supposed to include: 3 diff types of sandwiches, a scone & petit fours (which was the second reason why I came) unfortunately they were out of the petit fours & my world came to a screeching halt. We were offered an extra sandwich so we chose a PB&J but I still wanted a dessert. I glanced at the dessert case and it was empty except for a slice of lemon cake. I was not feeling lemon so i ended up dessertless. 😰. The cucumber & cream cheese sandwich is surprisingly wonderful, the tuna jalapeno sandwiches gave us life and the spinach and chicken sandwich took it right away. The chicken was great but just a little too much spinach. We had the Passionfruit, mango red tea which was good but I wished Honey was offered as an alternative sweetener. There wasnt sugar on the table we had to find it but there was plenty of Splenda and Sweet & Low, if thats your thing.

Im really sad about this place. I first went 5+ years ago and I really enjoyed the breakfast, the mimosas, the atmosphere. I always felt like it was a great value and was always tempted by the cake! This last time I went, the guy greeting us seemed super grumpy. Our portion sizes were TINY compared to the last time I went plus they had absolutely no drinks besides water & tea. Their soda machine was out. That wouldnt have bothered me if everything else looked a little better but you can tell they havent cleaned much. The whole place looks in disrepair.. So sad that this neighborhood institution isnt looking too great nowadays. Find a new staff that appreciates the neighborhood and is dedicated to the clientele.

The ambiance is nice and casual and the building is very quirky. It was nice. The food (tea roasted chicken salad) was very good and flavorful!Unfortunately The tea I was served I was very very disappointed with. The water have a very strong iron pipes/tap flavor and ruined the tea completely. For a Tea House they should have higher standards. Also only had 3 teas to choose from so I really had very limited options and again for a tea house it was disappointing. The food saved my experience here.

This place was absolutely horrible. Yes, it was great that we were greeted and explained the process when we walked in, but the experience ended there. As soon as we received the explanation of how this placed worked, the person greeting us immediately begins to tell us how they were pretty much out of everything. There were only maybe 5 teas available. Which was sloppily written on a receipt. The excuse was due to the weather. I’m sorry, you are a tea house, how are you out of your namesake??? Maybe get amazon prime and get same day delivery?? There literally were no desserts on display, only ONE scone. Then we’re told there is no soda available. And anything we tried to order was greeted with “we’re out of that” with an attitude. I would highly recommend NOT coming to this place.

My wife has been wanting to try this place for brunch for quite awhile now, so we gave it a shot.It is a very simple menu, with the classic brunch offerings in the heart of Southtown. My wife had the Benny of the Day consisting of perfectly cooked asparagus, ham and poached eggs that were over cooked but seasoned correctly. I ordered the Bagel Sandwich with bacon instead of ham and it was so-so. Defintely nothing to write home about. It was a frozen, pre-made bagel with decent bacon. The breakfast potatoes were okay at best. No seasoning, but cooked very well. All in all the tea was the star of the show, which is to be expected from a Tea House. The building could use some updating, but thats just my opinion. There are more exciting brunch places in the area, but for a quick and simple meal Madhatters will do.

Terrible customer service by an older man with glasses. He even asked me if it was my first time (very rudely) and if I wanted breakfast or lunch. I said breakfast and he said I need to hurry up and put my order in because breakfast is over in 5 minutes. So, that’s the way I found out you place your order at the counter. I ordered coffee and the spinach burrito and both were good.He knew it was my first time there, and when my food arrived I said I had a coffee also, only to find out it was self serve after waiting. Not only was he extremely rude, but he also argued with me because he would not let me use my gift card, and I wanted to know why and how to find out the balance. He said he didn’t know, that there’s no way for me to use the gift card and the old register broke. If it wasn’t so inexpensive and charming inside, I would not go back or suggest this place to anyone.I may go again, but hopeful I don’t have to speak to this man and if I do, the register better be working so I can use this gift card a stranger was so kind enough to give me.

This is a jeans and t-shirt tea experience. It’s not posh despite the location. The look of the place is supposed to be of a tea house in entropy. They are successful. The staff was nice but they are not tea experts. They are Bros who work at a tea shop. Messy hair and tats,-don’t care. Touching the tea bag with hands. Order was a bit wrong, but they did offer up a free tea to appease the party. Lipstick on the cup, one cup, out of 5. This IS a good place to take children for their first tea. The chinaware is eclectic and from a thrift store. No gold porcelain and silver which is perfect for little unsteady hands. This is a breakfast place with a location and feel a little above Waffle House but the same clientele.

We were really disappointed in the 3-tiered tower for two. We chose the Afternoon Tea option for $20. First, the two scones were way over-cooked and did not resemble a scone at all. Both were completely dark brown almost all the way through and flat . Second, the petit fours were actually pre-made pastries that you get at HEB cut in half. The sandwiches were ok, but not if you have a proper English tea time in mind. The bread was very thick dry sandwich bread. Tea was ok, but the pot is not big enough for two to share properly. This was my first visit, I had heard good things about the place, but at closer examination it is probably just local hype because of the eclectic nature of the restaurant and the crowd it draws. The reason for two stars instead of one is that this place is nice if you want a cup of coffee and wifi to get some work done.

This place was great ten years ago, I am not sure if there is new management or if their success went to their head but it has taken a nose dive. They only have cheap drip coffee (tasted like Folgers or similar) in a styrofoam cup and got rid of most of their pastries and snacks in favor of an overpriced “hip” menu. I love tea and getting tea here is just such a fun experience! I first tried this restaurant/tea house with my husband for breakfast. I loved picking out my tea cup and the tea pots they use are both beautiful and functional (they used a cast iron pot, which kept the tea hot for long enough). The potatoes with breakfast are delicious! The second time I came to the tea house I went with a friend and we got the high tea for two. This is the adult version of the little girl tea party of my dreams! It was so fun getting the three tiered tray with sandwiches and pastries and sitting in comfy chairs to talk. The other thing that I really appreciate about this place is the amazing level of responsiveness of the staff. I was missing an item on my tea tray and when I asked about it they immediately checked on the item. Every single element of this wacky tea house has been planned out to perfection... The tea list is amazing, the lilting house and patios are roomy, the lighting and paintings on the walls take you to a funkier side of SA. We stopped here after a girls weekend and were perfectly pleased -- stop in for mimosa brunch and grab you a pitcher (or 2!) for your Sunday morning!Note to the staff though: Because the tea and food are under the same table image but come out at different times, it got a little hard for us to keep track of what table number sticks to hang onto. Maybe theres a little tea pot charm or something that could hang on the image? That way when the tea comes out, the charm can be taken but the table marker would stay until food came out. I felt bad calling our server back when they grabbed my marker but I needed one more item on my order.(Just a small suggestion though -- everything else with our service was wonderful and I love the space youve created. Cant wait to visit again!)

Getting a two star for the atmosphere alone. This used to be one of my favorite places to come but it has gone down hill. Our favorite appetizer has always been the artichoke lollipops, the last two times they haven’t had them .. apparently the bacon and skewers are hard to get. The cake case which used to be full of beautiful cake slices or other baked good had practically nothing in them. They used to have a variety of teas now it’s just the basic sweet or unsweetened and there was a peach option. We had French onion soup ( another favorite) had always had so much cheese had practically none. Also had the original turkey sandwich which was nothing but processed slices of turkey with avocado which was just blah. The chips and salsa .... the salsa was fine but the chips tasted like they were the cheapest chips the place could find. It’s sad to see how bad this place has become. Been coming here off and on for about 10 years and I’m sad to say I won’t be going back.

Madhatters is in a super awesome location, so I was really surprised to see their menu options were as old as the restaurant itself. Really cute theme with the tea and tea sandwiches. But honestly my sandwich, which was the original turkey, had me questioning how this place is even still open. The turkey was simply decoration to my bread sandwich. Which, for $10, how could they even get away with putting one slice of deli meat on it?! The chips and salsa were mediocre, mostly because the chips were pretty stale, but the salsa was pretty tasty.I will say, their cakes looks absolutely delicious and if I am ever to even come back here it would just be for a slice of cake. Which, I dont have high hopes for with the food quality. But who knows, maybe thats how they are still open?

Tea (I had Irish Breakfast) was on-point: right time and temp, filtered water, good quantity. Glad to have not just driven past!Update 10/23/19: Theyve gone downhill quite a bit. Downgrading from 5 to 3 stars. Several sodas were out, and they only had 4 herbal teas to choose from this past weekend, and zero black teas. This is really unfortunate for a TEA house. The sweet tea was even not very good. To boot, the place needs a deep clean - its very grimy.

Very good food!!! Friendly staff. I like how you order your food in line then serve yourself in drinks. No waiting for a refillMy wife and I ate here Sunday and Monday I found service was quite fast they have a clean relaxing atmosphere. I plan on more meals here while we are in San Antonio .😊
